Murray was Head of Thorntons Law LLP’s Private Client department during my time as Chair of the firm. This was our largest fee-earning department, and under his leadership it grew substantially in colleague numbers and turnover while also improving profitability.
He introduced new ideas and ways of working that made the department leaner and more effective, freeing colleagues’ time to focus on clients. He was also instrumental in opening new offices and successfully integrating new colleagues into the firm’s culture, systems and processes.
Murray was always looking for smarter ways of working and brought colleagues with him through change, making new approaches practical and easier to adopt.
He also sat on the firm’s Operational Board, where he was an effective contributor — willing to challenge when necessary, but equally willing to support decisions and colleagues.
