Practical sessions for law firms
Better fee conversations.
Stronger leadership.
More effective risk management.
Tailored sessions for partners, senior lawyers and fee earners, drawing on practical experience of leading a growing legal practice and serving as President of the Law Society of Scotland.
Each session focuses on an agreed priority. We discuss your firm’s objectives beforehand, so the examples, discussion and practical approaches are relevant to your people and practice.

Pricing and commercial performance
Good legal work needs to translate into sustainable financial performance. This session explores how lawyers communicate value, agree scope and fees, and manage the conversations that affect profitability.
Topics can include:
- Explaining value and discussing fees with confidence.
- Recognising when the scope of a matter has changed.
- Reducing avoidable write-offs and improving billing discipline.
- Understanding when different pricing approaches may be appropriate.
Participants leave with practical approaches to fee conversations and a clearer understanding of how everyday decisions affect commercial performance.

Leadership and developing people
As lawyers take on greater responsibility, their success increasingly depends on how they lead others. This session explores the practical demands of supervising colleagues, developing capability and maintaining standards.
Topics can include:
- Moving from individual fee earner to team leader.
- Delegating effectively and setting clear expectations.
- Giving useful feedback and addressing difficult issues.
- Building accountability while supporting professional development.
Participants leave with practical approaches to leading teams and greater confidence in handling challenging conversations.

Risk management and governance
Effective risk management depends on everyday habits, clear responsibilities and a culture in which concerns are raised early. This session draws on my experience leading professional risk-management initiatives and working within partnership and governance structures.
Topics can include:
- Recognising how routine practice can create avoidable exposure.
- Strengthening supervision, communication and escalation.
- Learning from complaints, mistakes and near misses.
- Clarifying responsibility and improving decision-making.
Participants leave with a framework for discussing risk and identifying practical improvements within their firm.

AI and innovation in legal practice
Technology creates opportunities to improve legal work, but firms need to decide where it adds value and how to use it responsibly. This session explores practical applications alongside the professional judgement and oversight they require.
Topics can include:
- Identifying tasks where AI could improve productivity.
- Considering confidentiality, accuracy and human review.
- Choosing a manageable starting point for adoption.
